Business owner lacks benefits
Right Honourable Ralph Goodale,
I am president of Red Rock IT Consulting based in Regina. I am deeply concerned about your government’s proposal to alter how corporations are taxed.
I take exception to how Finance Minister Morneau characterized the need for these changes, essentially portraying business owners as tax-evading cheats. I found this personally offensive.
While this may have played well to a large segment of the population, the vast majority of business owners are compliant with existing laws and often receive fewer benefits than other private-sector workers (and far fewer than those in the public sector).
As a business owner, I do not have a company pension, health plan, benefits and vacation. Mr. Morneau neglected to mention these details.
These costs are out-ofpocket and incurred after I have paid taxes TWICE: once when my corporation earns money, and again when I draw income.
Although I am the sole employee of my company,
I do keep my accountant, a lawyer and a financial adviser gainfully employed to assist with the corporation. I am also a non-reimbursed tax collector when I remit GST for my services. Your government doesn’t appear to recognize or value any of these indirect contributions to the economy.
As a former finance minister, I am sure you fully understand these changes. My company is my family’s future and all that I have to provide for our security in retirement.
I implore your government Scott Johnston, Regina not to make these changes.
