Novik leads Spartans over Bears

The all-around excellence of Mason Novik helped the SheldonWil­liams Spartans defeat the Balfour Bears 31-7 in Regina Intercolle­giate Football League action Thursday at Leibel Field.

Novik caught five passes for 216 yards, including touchdowns of 100 and 68 yards, in addition to making an intercepti­on. He registered his second 200-yard receiving game of the season.

Keegan Kaytor of the Spartans completed 15 of 27 passes for 339 yards and two touchdowns.

Finn Marcotte-Cribb had five receptions for 64 yards for the winners.

Thursday’s other RIFL scores were: Balgonie Greenall Griffins 26, Notre Dame Hounds 5; Thom Trojans 42, Luther Lions 0; and, Johnson Wildcats 42, Martin Monarchs 8.

Kaleb Swann scored five goals to lead Sheldon-Williams to a 10-7 victory over Johnson in Regina high school boys tier 2 soccer action Thursday. Sangay Tamang scored five goals for Johnson.

Also on Thursday, Abdel Almosallem scored twice for Martin in a 5-3 victory over the Riffel Royals. John Caudilla scored a pair for Riffel.

Liam Ellis scored twice to help the Miller Marauders edge the Winston Knoll Wolverines 3-2.

The Tor Hill Golf Course finished first in the Regina and Area Match Play League standings, registerin­g 516 points. Deer Valley was second at 475, followed by the Wascana Country Club (472.5), the Murray Golf Course (459.5) and the Royal Regina Golf Club (451).

Brennen Smith of Regina is the Sask Sport Inc. athlete of the month for August.

Smith won a gold medal in the under-23 division and placed third in the elite category at the world aquathlon championsh­ips.

The other nominees were Julee Stewart of Regina (baton twirling), Shelby Newkirk of Saskatoon (para-swimming) and Julie Labach of Saskatoon (athletics).
