Thunder victory over Calgary was a rush

The Regina Thunder improved its record to 5-2 on Sunday by defeating the Calgary Colts 33-15 at Mosaic Stadium.

Victor St. Pierre-Laviolette led the Regina offence by rushing for 169 yards and one touchdown. The Thunder also got two rushing TDs from Joel Senko and one from Brock Sich.

Sich started at quarterbac­k in place of Sawyer Buettner, who missed the game due to the flu. Sich completed 11 of 19 passes for 190 yards — 92 of which were registered by Levi Paul, who had three receptions.

Matthew Williams, Carter Stusek, Carson Bell and Parker Dawson had sacks for the Thunder, which got intercepti­ons from Tyrel Latoski, Parker Scott, Cordell Kadash and Logan Mainil.

The Thunder concludes its PFC regular-season schedule Saturday night against the host Winnipeg Rifles.

The Balfour Bears and Johnson Wildcats both improved their records to 4-1 in Regina Intercolle­giate Football League action Friday.

Balfour defeated the Thom Trojans 21-0 while Johnson blanked the Balgonie Greenall Griffins 200. Balfour and Johnson are tied for first place in the Stewart Conference.

In Friday’s other games, the Martin Monarchs defeated the Luther Lions 24-6 and the Sheldon-Williams Spartans downed the Notre Dame Hounds 32-6. Greenall, Sheldon-Williams and Thom are all 3-2.

Daud Riaz starred on both sides of the ball for Martin. Defensivel­y, he had five tackles, one sack and one intercepti­on. He also ran for a 60-yard touchdown. Manny Ramos led Martin in rushing yards, with 109.

Taggart Rowell and Jacob Paul each had seven tackles for Luther.

The Regina Pat Canadians will carry a 1-1 record into Wednesday’s home opener against the Notre Dame Argos (8 p.m., Co-operators Centre).

Regina split its first two regular-season games, both of which were played on the weekend at the Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League’s Warman Showcase. Regina lost 3-2 to the Saskatoon Contacts on Saturday before downing the Saskatoon Blazers 6-1 on Sunday.

Parker Hendren (with two goals) and Chase Nameth (one goal, two assists) were Regina’s offensive leaders on Sunday.

Jarett Gerlach and Taylor Hoedel had hat tricks for the Traveland RV Storm as it defeated the Regina Silver Foxes 10-4 in Prairie Junior Hockey League action Sunday at the Pilot Butte Recreation Centre.

Hoedel had a goal and an assist Saturday in the Storm’s seasonopen­ing 3-2 loss to the visiting Saskatoon Royals.

The Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals began their season Sunday with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Delisle Chiefs at the Al Ritchie Memorial Centre.

Josh Atkinson had the overtime winner and two assists. Regina’s Braydon Delorme also had one goal and two helpers.

Carolina Goncalves scored 14 points to lead the University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team to an 80-65 non-conference victory over the University of Carleton Ravens on Sunday in Ottawa.

Charlotte Kot (12 points) and Sara Hubenig (11) also scored in double figures for Regina, which lost 85-71 to the McGill University Martlets on Thursday in Montreal. Kot and Christina McCusker each had 15 points for the Cougars against McGill.

The Cougars men’s hockey team suffered a pair of 8-0 exhibition losses to American teams on the weekend in Minnesota.

Regina fell to St. Cloud State (Saturday) and Minnesota State (Sunday).

The U of R’s women’s volleyball team had a 3-2 record on the weekend at the Unruh Realty Invitation­al Tournament in Winnipeg.

In men’s volleyball, the Cougars had a 1-4 record at the Brandon University Bobcats tournament.

Tyler Steenberge­n of the Swift Current Broncos is the WHL player of the week after recording six goals and three assists in victories over the Regina Pats and Brandon Wheat Kings.
