British veteran’s stolen medals recovered

-

SASKATOON A British armed forces veteran now living in Saskatchewan will be able to wear his medals for Remembrance Day, after all.

Nine medals stolen from the Kindersley home of Jim Watson were turned in to police Friday.

Kindersley RCMP said someone brought the medals to the detachment on Friday. Police won’t say who turned them in, only that the investigation is ongoing and no suspects have been identified.

Watson’s medals were stolen during a break-in at his apartment in Kindersley last weekend, along with military memorabilia and other household items. The former staff sergeant, 54, said earlier this week he was devastated and upset that he wouldn’t have his medals to wear on Nov. 11.

Kindersley RCMP spokeswoman Meghan Mochoruk said the medals appeared undamaged. Watson was waiting to hear from police about when he could pick them up.

Watson, a married father and grandfather, immigrated to Canada in 2003 after a 24-year military career and worked in the oilpatch before the economic downturn. He served in the Gulf War, Bosnia and Iraq.

On Friday, he said he is “extremely happy” that the medals are accounted for.

“As far as the culprits are concerned, I am a firm believer in karma and they will eventually be caught.”
