Pats head home with 2-1-1 record on road trip

-

The Regina Pats salvaged a winning record on their first extended road trip of the season with a 5-3 win Sunday over the host Edmonton Oil Kings.

Regina improved to 9-6-2 overall while going 2-1-1 on a four-game Central Division swing.

Bryan Lockner opened the scoring 7:26 into the first period, but Edmonton’s Nick Bowman got it back with 60 seconds left in the frame.

That was followed by two more goals in the final minute. Regina’s Matt Bradley scored five seconds after Bowman’s marker, but Tomas Soustal tied it with two seconds on the clock.

Regina broke the game open in the second with power play goals from Dawson Davidson, Braydon Buziak and Wyatt Slobosian — all in a span of 7:26 — to make it 5-2.

David Kope got one back in the third for Edmonton (5-8-1).

Goaltender Max Paddock picked up the win for the Pats, who were outshot 40-30. Davidson finished with one goal and three helpers while fellow defenceman Jonathan Smart added four assists. It was the first career four-point night for each player.

One night earlier, ex-Pat Lane Zablocki scored 1:42 into overtime to give the Red Deer Rebels a 4-3 comeback win over Regina.

Hunter Donohoe, Jack Flaman and Grayson Pawlenchuk had the other goals for the Rebels, who were outshot 31-20.

Davidson, Josh Mahura and Robbie Holmes replied for the Pats, who overcame an early 2-0 deficit.

Holmes gave them a 3-2 lead midway through the second but Pawlenchuk tied it early in the third and Zablocki completed the comeback in OT.

Goaltender Tyler Brown took the loss, allowing four goals on 20 shots.

Extras: The Pats were without captain Sam Steel for each of the past two games due to injury … Regina returns to home ice Wednesday against the Kootenay Ice.
