Miller, Luther soccer sides win silver

-

The Miller Marauders and Luther Lions earned silver medals at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association soccer championships on the weekend.

The Saskatoon Centennial Chargers defeated Miller 5-0 in Saturday’s 3A boys gold-medal game at the University of Regina. Balgonie’s Greenall High School hosted the tournament.

In Moose Jaw, the Saskatoon Bishop Mahoney Saints defeated Luther 2-0 in the 2A girls championship match. The Moose Jaw Vanier Vikings placed third.

In the provincial 3A girls final, played in Estevan, the Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians defeated the Swift Current Ardens 5-0.

The other provincial champions are the Middle Lake Avengers (1A boys), Warman Warriors (1A girls) and Humboldt Mohawks (2A boys). The Yorkton Sacred Heart Saints were third in the 2A boys classification.

After Saturday’s 44-15 loss to the host UBC Thunderbirds, the University of Regina Rams are to return to Vancouver next weekend for a Canada West football semifinal.

The regular-season finale determined home-field advantage for a Regina/UBC playoff tilt.

Regina led 5-0 after the first quarter, only to be outscored 35-0 in the second frame. UBC piled up 44 consecutive points before the Rams got on the board again.

One of the few bright spots for Regina was the play of Atlee Simon, who rushed for 115 yards. A fourth consecutive 100yard game enabled Simon to overtake Neal Hughes for top spot on the collegiate Rams’ all-time rushing list.

Simon finished the game with 2,943 career yards, eight more than Hughes.

Also of note was a two-sack performance by Nicholas Dheilly. He finished the 2017 campaign with 6 1/2 sacks, tying the singleseason mark Akiem Hicks established in 2011.

The Rams (4-4) finished in third place. UBC (6-2) placed second. The teams are to meet again Saturday at 4 p.m.
