Awards salute provincial movies
Winners were unveiled Friday night at the fourth annual Saskatchewan Independent Film Awards.
The event, presented by the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative, was held at the Artesian On 13th and saw awards presented in five categories. A total of 45 short and feature-length independent films were submitted to the event.
Gordon Pepper, executive director of the Saskatchewan Filmpool Cooperative, was thrilled with the event. “This capacity audience absolutely loved watching these films created by Saskatchewan audiences,” Pepper said in a news release. “This event demonstrates that we have a lot of great talent to celebrate in this province.”
The category winners were:
Best Short Film: Gas Can, by Mattias Graham.
Also nominated were: The Flats, by Ian Campbell; From Up North, by Trudy Stewart; Eyes of Sorrow Moon, by Gerald Saul; and, Under The Same Sky, by Sylvia Ziemann.
Best Student Film: Separate Beds, by Layton Burton.
Also nominated were: A Moment Goes By, by Timothy Merasty; Doktor Ripp, by Matthew Ripplinger; Home Sewn, by Morgan Jones; and, Evelyn & I, by Weiye Su.
Best Acting: Mark Claxton in Doktor Ripp.
Also nominated were: Natalie Lazarou, Talent; Anna Mazurik, The Tinwife; Logan Vanghel, Heistery; and, Shawn Koch, Heistery.
Best Feature Film: Talent, by Lucas Frison.
Also nominated were: Josi Victoria: A Complicated Masquerade, by Ken Dalgarno; and, Rigger, by Dianne Ouellette.
Best Technical Achievement: Travis Neufeld, production design for The Tin Wife.
Also nominated were: Layton Burton, cinematography, Talent; Joel Tabak, cinematography, Doktor Ripp; Devin McAdam, cinematography, The Tinwife; Kevin Drysdale, editing, Separate Beds; and, Ian Campbell, production design, The Flats.
