The University of Regina Cougars men’s basketball team is shooting for six.

Head coach Steve Burrows and his crew will carry a five-game winning streak into Friday’s Canada West game against the visiting University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The Cougars (5-1) are undefeated since losing their Canada West regular-season opener.

“Every win in this league is hard,” Burrows said. “Any one we can take, we feel good about it. We try to tick off the boxes and go on to the next one.”

The Cougars have enjoyed a strong start despite a lack of eyepopping individual statistics.

“We’re pretty balanced,” Burrows said. “We don’t rely on one or two guys. We’re just trying to stress the importance of moving the basketball around and that it doesn’t matter who takes the shots.

“I think that’s showing as far as who’s scoring for us. We usually have four or five guys in double figures. That’s a good indication of how we try to play. If you take ownership of that process, you can be a hard team to guard.”

Every victory is crucial in a highly competitive conference that’s led by Lethbridge (8-0). The University of Alberta Golden Bears (6-0) are also undefeated. Regina and the University of Calgary Dinos (7-1) have each lost only once.

The UBC Thunderbirds (6-2), University of Manitoba Bisons (53) and University of Victoria Vikes (5-3) also have winning records.

Lethbridge is also 8-0 in women’s basketball. Regina, the thirdranked women’s team in U Sports, is 5-1 entering its weekend doubleheader with the Pronghorns.

Games are set for 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men) on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.
