QB question for Riders is clear as mud

The Saskatchewan Roughriders must pass the torch without it being intercepted.

Somehow, some way, they need to execute a succession plan that results in the entrenchment of someone as the long-term quarterbacking solution.

But who might that be?

The equation has so many variables — one of which is the NFL.

On Sunday, for example, 3DownNation.com’s Justin Dunk reported that the Roughriders’ Brandon Bridge — who can test CFL free agency in February — has a workout scheduled with the New York Giants.

Earlier, Dunk had reported that there is NFL interest in the Edmonton Eskimos’ James Franklin, who is also a pending free agent.

Bridge and Franklin just happen to be the most intriguing quarterbacking options from the Roughriders’ perspective.

The 26-year-old Franklin, who has spent the past three seasons backing up Mike Reilly, has been mentioned as a possible Roughrider ever since Chris Jones became the team’s head coach, general manager and vice-president of football operations.

Jones coached Edmonton to a 2015 Grey Cup victory before being wooed away from the Alberta capital by Roughriders president-CEO Craig Reynolds.

Bridge, 25, was generally impressive in relief of Kevin Glenn during the 2017 season. The final quarterbacking switch was made after Glenn threw his third interception in the East Division final, in which the Toronto Argonauts rallied to defeat Saskatchewan 25-21.

That game would seem to mark the end of Glenn’s tenure as Saskatchewan’s starter. The 38-year-old veteran could very well return in a support capacity, but who might be ahead of him on the depth chart?

It’s complicated.
