Balcarres to host Hockey Day festivitie­s

Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchew­an festivitie­s will be held Jan. 19-21 in Balcarres.

Hockey Day itself is set for Jan. 20, when the Melville Millionair­es and Battleford­s North Stars will play an SJHL game in the community of 600.

A banquet featuring Hockey Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr is slated for Jan. 19.

A variety of other hockey games will also be held in Balcarres that weekend, including a Jan. 20 Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League game between the Regina Pat Canadians and Yorkton RawTec Maulers.

Also on Jan. 20, the Melville Prairie Fire will oppose the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats in a Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League game.

On Jan. 21, the Qu’Appelle Valley Hockey League All-Stars will meet the Bethune Bulldogs in a senior hockey game. The Bulldogs will compete for the 2018 Allan Cup.

Also on Jan. 21, Fort Knox (from Fort Qu’Appelle) is to meet the Saskatchew­an Westleys in Prairie Junior Hockey League action.

The Balcarres organizing committee hopes to raise $80,000 to put toward recent rink improvemen­ts. Tickets, including full weekend passes, are available at the Balcarres Town Office, Broncs Kitchen in the rink, Chatterson Lumber, Pattison Agricultur­e and R.W. & Sons Builders.

Some 71 members of the University of Regina’s athletic program have received Academic All-Canadian honours — signifying a grade-point average of at least 80 per cent.

Recently graduated athletes Mitch Kilgore (men’s hockey), Kacey McFee (women’s soccer) and Molly Wade-Cummings (women’s volleyball) earned the academic award for the fifth time in as many seasons of U Sports eligibilit­y.

The complete honour roll from the 2016-17 athletic/academic year is as follows:

The 71 Academic All-Canadians is the second-highest total in University of Regina history. The Rams/Cougars combined for 78 Academic All-Canadians in 201516.

Regina Pats co-owner and governor

Anthony Marquart is a recipient of the Senate of Canada 150th Anniversar­y Medal.

The medals recognize Canada’s volunteers, community activists and unsung heroes in conjunctio­n with the 150th anniversar­y of the Senate’s first sitting.

Saskatchew­an Senator Denise Batters nominated Marquart in recognitio­n of his varied efforts on behalf of the city of Regina.

“Regina is the best community in the world and I am honoured to be recognized with this very special medal,” Marquart said in a media release. “I am privileged to be friends and work with so many great people in Regina.”

Luke Mylymok scored three goals

and added two assists on Wednesday as the Notre Dame Hounds blanked the Moose Jaw Generals 12-0 in Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League action at Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox.

Mylymok upped his tally to 23 goals on the season, tying him with Jaydon Dureau of the Regina Pat Canadians for the league lead. Dureau was called up by the WHL’s Portland Winterhawk­s earlier this week.

Notre Dame’s Riley Kohonick made 14 saves to earn the shutout on Wednesday.

The Traveland RV Storm improved

its record to 17-7-0-0 on Wednesday by defeating the host Assiniboia Southern Rebels 4-2 in PJHL action.

Luke Niemegeers, Taylor Hoedel, Dylan Eberle and Will Jordan scored for the Storm. Carson Cayer and Dakota Helland replied for Assiniboia.

Clayton Eisler scored at 4:57

of overtime to give the Melville Millionair­es a 2-1 SJHL victory over the Weyburn Red Wings at Crescent Point Place on Wednesday.

Weyburn’s Tyran Brown forced overtime by scoring with 1:04 remaining in the third period.

Melville’s Shane Sherban opened the scoring in the first period.
