Eberle off to roaring start at Scotties

Chantelle Eberle of Regina and Robyn Silvernagl­e of North Battleford were tied for the lead after Thursday’s afternoon draw at the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Melfort.

Eberle and Silvernagl­e had 4-1 records heading into their evening matches at the Saskatchew­an women’s curling championsh­ip.

Candace Chisholm of Carlyle and the defending champion, Penny Barker of Moose Jaw were next in line at 3-2. Saskatoon’s Stefanie Lawton was 3-3.

The Scotties continues until Sunday.

The University of Regina Cougars and the visiting Mount Royal University Cougars are preparing to meet in Canada West men’s basketball, women’s basketball and men’s hockey.

The U of R and Mount Royal basketball teams are to meet on Friday and Saturday at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport. Games are set for 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men), both nights.

In men’s hockey, Mount Royal is to play the U of R on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (3 p.m.) at the Co-operators Centre.

Also, the women’s hockey team will be in Calgary for games against Mount Royal on Friday and Saturday.

The U of R’s men’s and women’s volleyball teams are to oppose the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies on Friday and Saturday in Saskatoon.

Brayden Burke of the Moose Jaw Warriors is the WHL’s player of the month for December.

He had 29 points, including eight goals, in 11 games — over which he was plus-10.

Carter Hart of the Everett Silvertips was named the goaltender of the month after winning all five of his starts, stopping 171 of 174 shots, and registerin­g two shutouts.

The Warriors remain at second in the weekly CHL top-10 rankings, behind the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.

The Swift Current Broncos (fourth) and Brandon Wheat Kings (fifth) are also in the top 10.
