THEY DARED NOT TO WEAR BLACK.

- National Post news services

Three women dared not to wear black at the Golden Globes in support of the Time’s Up movement in aid of victims of sexual misconduct. The women were criticized on social media, but some people also came to their defence by pointing out that shaming actresses for what they wear is part of the problem. All three women defended their decision. Here’s why black wasn’t their colour.

BLANCA BLANCO actress

The actress tweeted that “red is passionate” and “shaming is part of the problem” after she was criticized for ditching black for a cut-out dress. She said that she believes change is long overdue, and her decision to wear red doesn’t mean that she’s against the movement. “The issue is bigger than my dress colour #TIMESUP,” she tweeted after the show.

BARBARA MEIER model

The German model walked the red carpet in a floral gown, and said it was because women have long fought for the freedom to wear whatever they want. “We should not have to wear black to be taken serious. US women should shine, be colourful, and sparkle. Just like it is our nature. In my opinion this symbolizes our freedom and our new strength,” she wrote in an Instagram post. However, she added “a lot of bad things happened and should never happen again!”

MEHER TATNA President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association

Showing up in an embroidered red gown might seem like an odd choice, but Meher Tatna, who was born in Mumbai, India, explained that in her culture, bright colours are worn during a celebration. Black, on the other hand, is worn by widows who are mourning. She said she chose the dress with her mother weeks before. Tatna said she strongly supports the movement, and accessorized her outfit with a Time’s Up pin.
