Broncos, Hurricanes pull off WHL blockbuste­r

The Swift Current Broncos made a massive move in advance of Wednesday’s WHL trade deadline.

On Tuesday, the Broncos acquired forward Giorgio Estephan, 20, goaltender Stuart Skinner, 19, and Mossbank-born forward Tanner Nagel, 19, from the Lethbridge Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes received forwards Logan Barlage, 16, and Owen Blocker, 17, defenceman Matthew Stanley, 19, Regina-born goaltender Logan Flodell, 20, first- and third-round selections in the 2020 bantam draft, and a conditiona­l second-rounder in 2021.

The Broncos have a 29-10-3-0 record, which is good for second in the Eastern Conference. Swift Current is eight points behind the front-running Moose Jaw Warriors (33-6-1-2).

The trade deadline is 4 p.m., Regina time.

A sendoff for the Sara England curling team is to be held Wednesday, 7:30 p.m., at the Callie Curling Club.

England, third Shelby Brandt, second Stasia Wisniewski, lead Rayann Zerr, fifth Renee Michaud and coach Susan Lang are preparing to leave for the Canadian junior women’s curling championsh­ip, which begins Saturday in Shawinigan, Que.

The Andrew Hay team won the championsh­ip at the 114th Regina Men’s Bonspiel on the weekend.

In addition to winning the Leader-Post Event, Hay ’s team won the Lieutenant Governor’s Award. Hay won the Boris Letwinka Memorial MVP Award.

The Ben Gamble team was the Beer Bros. Gastropub Shootout winner.

Along with Hay, the event winners were Sheldon Obst (Regina Auto Body), Jacob Kydd (Northern Fireplace Ltd.), Lorne Solomon (Molson Coors), Art Assman (Laurie Artiss), Brent Goeres (Boston Pizza), Chris Semenchuk (Richardson Lighting), Daniel Selke (Access Communicat­ions) and Brennen Jones (Royal Sporting Goods Ltd.).

The Regina Rogue won the silver medal in the under-19 division at the Jim Benning Ringette Tournament in Regina on the weekend.

The Saskatoon Royals defeated the Rogue 11-5 in the gold-medal game. The Rogue’s goal scorers were Taylor Verhelst, Jessica Kosar, Meghan Embury, Melissa Donald and Jasmine Johnson.
