LIFE’S A BEACH ALONG THE TIBER
Italy’s capital city — tired of turning its back on its signature river — has launched a plan to create a 10,000-square-metre artificial beach along the Tiber this summer.
Virginia Raggi, the mayor of Rome, said it will be a haven for residents — who often swelter in temperatures of 40 C — and a draw for sun-seeking tourists.
Inspired by a similar scheme along the Seine in Paris, the temporary beach near Rome’s Marconi Bridge will be located just south of some of the city’s key attractions.
The Local news site said it’s not clear if swimming will be allowed, but noted partiers have been known to take the plunge during New Year’s celebrations. Saying she wants to restore “decorum and livability” to the riverside, Raggi said the beach project is part of a larger effort to reclaim the Tiber that includes police bicycle patrols and drones to curb illegal dumping.
