Cougars women’s team strikes gold at Golden Bear Invitation­al

The University of Regina Cougars women’s wrestling team won the female division at the Golden Bear Invitation­al meet Saturday in Edmonton.

Amber Wiebe (51 kilograms) and Inga Hammer (72kg) won individual titles for the Cougars, who got bronze-medal performanc­es from Sara Tokarz (48kg), Miki Rowbottom (59kg) and Jessica Rabet (82kg).

The Cougars women’s team was ranked fourth in U Sports entering the meet, but moved up to second in this week’s rankings.

In men’s competitio­n, the Cougars’ Josh Zimroz won a bronze medal in the 61kg division at the Golden Bear Invitation­al.

Three members of the Cougars men’s team — ranked ninth in U Sports — won their events Friday during a dual meet with the host University of Calgary Dinos.

The victorious Cougars wrestlers were Zimroz (61kg), Tony Melgar (54 kg) and Jacob Hall (90kg). Calgary won the dual meet 34-13.

Hammer is ranked second nationally at 72kg. The other Cougars female wrestlers in the U Sports individual rankings are Wiebe (third, 51kg), Rabet (third, 82kg), Rowbottom (fifth, 59kg), Erica Ravelo (fifth, 55kg), Tokarz (sixth, 48kg), Meaghan Wild (seventh, 63kg) and Rachel Evans (seventh, 67kg).

In men’s wrestling, the following Cougars are ranked: Waylon Decoteau (first, 100kg), Jordan Tholl (third, 120kg), Zimroz (sixth, 61kg), Paul Tokarz (sixth, 57kg), Hayden LaFontaine (seventh, 82kg) and Lucas Hoffert (eighth, 68kg).

The U of R is also ranked nationally in women’s basketball (third), women’s swimming (seventh) and men’s swimming (eighth).

Montreal Canadiens alumni will be in Gravelbour­g this weekend.

They will play the Notekeu AllStars on Saturday, 3 p.m., at La Palestre Arena.

In addition, Canadiens alumni will remain in Gravelbour­g for Family Fun Day on Sunday. That event will include an autograph session (11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.), a celebrity shootout (1 p.m. to 2 p.m.) and a skate with the kids (2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.).

Mackenna Klotz scored 15 points to lead the O’Neill Titans to a 57-52 victory over the Miller Marauders in Regina Intercolle­giate Basketball League senior girls action Monday. Cassandra Nameth led Miller with 10 points.

In junior girls action, Brooke Linner scored 16 points to lead Miller to a 65-47 victory over O’Neill, which got 15 points from Samantha Liamzon.

The Regina Rebels split a pair of Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League games with the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats on the weekend at the Co-operators Centre.

On Saturday, Carissa Hogan’s overtime goal gave Swift Current a 1-0 victory. Amaya Giraudier made 39 saves for the shutout. Regina’s Chantel Weller made 37 saves.

On Sunday, Regina got two goals and two assists from Miranda Hatt in an 8-3 victory over Swift Current.

Lauren Focht and Ally Kosteniuk also had two-goal performanc­es for Regina, which got singles from Sydney Pedersen and Brooklyn Stevely. Tenelle Lind, Taylor Lind and Sara Kendall scored for Swift Current.

The Regina Classic 5-Pin Bowling Cash Tournament is to be held Feb. 22 to 25 at the Golden Mile Bowling Lanes.

The annual event is expected to attract approximat­ely 100 bowlers from across Canada. Each year, the total cash prizes range from $40,000 to $60,000.

The top 32 bowlers advance to the championsh­ip round, which is to begin Feb. 25 at 9 a.m., and continue throughout the day.

The 2018 Regina Indoor Games track meet is slated for Feb. 9 and 10 at the Sportplex.

The bantam AA Prairie Storm placed fourth at the recent Kamloops Invitation­al Bantam Ice Hockey Tournament.

The Prince George Junior Cougars defeated the Storm 3-2 in double overtime in the bronzemeda­l game.

Tyson Kistner, who had three goals and three assists in six games, was the Storm’s top scorer during the tournament.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes won the A final at the Fred McBeth Western Canada Invitation­al midget AA boys hockey tournament on the weekend in Regina.

Lethbridge got two goals from Griffen Fraser en route to defeating the Warman Wildcats 4-2.

In the B final, the Regina Vics edged the Martensvil­le Marauders 5-4. Kyle Colwell had two goals for the Vics, who got singles from Hunter Beach, Lucas Dureau and Erik DeRosier.

Bradley Sentes was the victorious goaltender.

The Regina Mustangs bantam B boys hockey team won the Rod Hamm Memorial Tournament in Saskatoon on the weekend.

The Mustangs defeated the Saskatoon Renegade Bulls 4-2 in the final. En route to the final, the Mustangs defeated the Lloydminst­er Blazers (7-3) and Martensvil­le Pirates (5-3).

The Swift Current Legionnair­es got two goals from Rin Beny en route to doubling the visiting Regina Pat Canadians in Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League action Sunday.

Jacob Piller and Christian Riemer also scored for Swift Current (19-9-0-3), which got 42 saves from Steve Duchscher. Tyler Prykikta and Chase Nameth replied for Regina.

The Pat Canadians are to play host to the Yorkton RawTec Maulers on Wednesday (8 p.m., Co-operators Centre).

Regina (25-5-2-1) is in third place, behind the Notre Dame Hounds (27-1-0-2) and Prince Albert Mintos (26-4-2-0).

Stuart Skinner of the Swift Current Broncos is the WHL’s goaltender of the week.

Skinner, whom the Broncos acquired from the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Jan. 9, won his first two starts with Swift Current — registerin­g a shutout and allowing only one goal in the other game. He had a .980 save percentage over those two games.

Lethbridge’s Dylan Cozens earned player-of-the-week honours after registerin­g nine points, including five goals, in three games.

team, from the Callie, finished the round robin with a 1-5 record at the Canadian junior women’s curling championsh­ip in Shawinigan, Que.

On Tuesday, Team Saskatchew­an lost 12-3 to Justine Comeau of New Brunswick and 6-2 to Shae Bevan of Manitoba.

England curls with third Shelby Brandt, second Stasia Wisniewski and lead Rayann Zerr.

At the junior men’s nationals, also in Shawinigan, Saskatoon’s Rylan Kleiter team carried an 0-5 record into Tuesday’s game against Nova Scotia’s Matthew Manuel.
