Stingers defend Golden Ring title

The Regina Stingers won their second consecutiv­e under-16 AA title at the Esso Golden Ring ringette tournament in Calgary.

They defeated the Calgary Surge 7-4 in Sunday’s final.

The Golden Ring, which features 187 teams in 16 divisions, is the world’s largest ringette tournament.

The Stingers will now participat­e in the Gloucester Cumberland Ringette Tournament (Feb. 1-4 in Ottawa) and the Canadian championsh­ips (April 7-14 in Winnipeg).

Carol LaFayette-Boyd of Regina set two world and two Canadian masters track and field records on the weekend at the University of Alberta’s Golden Bear Open in Edmonton.

Competing in the women’s 75plus division, she set world records in the long jump (3.97 metres) and triple jump (8.33m). She also establishe­d new Canadian marks in the 60m (9.66 seconds) and 200m (33.45).

The University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team has moved up a spot to second overall in the weekly U Sports rankings.

The McGill University Martlets were first in the voting with 532 points. The Cougars, who have won 10 consecutiv­e games, were 15 points behind.

The U of R is also ranked in the top 10 in women’s wrestling (second), women’s swimming (seventh), men’s swimming (eighth) and men’s wrestling (ninth).

Brian Ofori, a member of the University of Regina Cougars men’s basketball team, is the Canada West third star of the week.

Ofori scored a career-high 29 points in a 106-97 loss to the visiting Brandon University Bobcats on Friday.

The next night, Regina defeated Brandon 83-75 on the strength of Ofori’s 23 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and two steals.

Adin Clark scored 15 points to help the Lumsden Devils defeat the Balgonie Greenall Griffins 6054 in Regina Intercolle­giate Basketball League senior boys action Tuesday. Greenall’s Dillon Schulz also had 15 points.

In senior girls action on Monday, Sarah Beatty scored 18 points to lead the Lumsden Angels to a 67-49 victory over Greenall. Jillian Hoffman led Greenall with 18 points.

Cade Mather scored 20 points to lead the LeBoldus Golden Suns to an 85-62 victory over the O’Neill Titans in junior boys action on Friday. Zack Ludwar led O’Neill with 14 points.

In senior boys action on Friday, LeBoldus got 18 points from Ben Camplin in a 98-59 victory over O’Neill. The Titans’ Payton Friesen scored a game-high 19 points.

Taylor Hoedel’s hat-trick led the Traveland RV Storm to a 6-3 victory over the Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals in Prairie Junior Hockey League action on Tuesday at the Al Ritchie Memorial Centre.

Jarett Gerlach, Will Jordan and Shayne McKay also scored for the Storm. Jarid Morhart, Brayden Cockwill and Braydon Delorme replied for the Capitals.

The Storm lead the Bill Johnston Division with a 22-11-0-0 record and 44 points — two more than the Capitals (20-7-0-2), who have four games in hand.

Also on Tuesday, Chance Horsman scored twice to lead Fort Knox to a 7-4 victory over the Assiniboia Southern Rebels at the Fort Qu’Appelle Rexentre.

The Notre Dame Hounds doubled the Regina Rebels 4-2 in Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League action on Tuesday at Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox.

Olivia Hanson, Claire Nimegeers, Abbey Nimegeers and Sophie Young scored for Notre Dame. Miranda Hatt and Lauren Focht answered for Regina.

Cameco Hockey Day in Saskatchew­an, held Saturday in Balcarres, raised $67,295 toward renovation­s of the community’s 51-year-old hockey arena.

Hockey Day in Saskatchew­an travels to a different community each year to help raise funds for a local arena.

The Saskatchew­an Baseball Hall of Fame is requesting nomination­s for individual­s, teams, families and communitie­s to be considered for induction.

The nomination deadline is March 15. The 34th annual induction dinner takes place Aug. 18 in Battleford.

Hockey Regina’s 26th annual Pee Wee Classic tournament runs Thursday to Sunday at the Co-operators Centre.

Finals in the 32-team event are set for Sunday at 9:15 p.m. (D championsh­ip), 9:45 a.m. (C), 12:15 p.m. (B) and 2:45 p.m. (A).

The Saskatchew­an open judo championsh­ips will be held on Saturday and Sunday at the Fieldhouse.
