Saskatoon’s Clark scores in Olympic semifinal win
Saskatoon’s Emily Clark scored her first Olympic goal Monday to help Canada blank the Olympic Athletes from Russia 5-0 in a women’s hockey semifinal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
Clark scored at 2:30 of the third period to give Canada a 4-0 lead.
Canada is to meet the United States in the gold-medal game, which is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:10 p.m., Saskatchewan time. The Americans defeated Finland 5-0 in the other semifinal.
The Canadian roster also includes Brigitte Lacquette of Mallard, Man., who has family ties to Cote First Nation (near Yorkton). Lacquette once represented the Yorkton Tribal Council at the Saskatchewan First Nations Winter Games.
The Canadian team is shooting for its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal.
In men’s hockey, Team Canada — including Linden Vey of Wakaw — is set to play in a quarter-final Wednesday (6:10 a.m., Saskatchewan time). Canada had two victories and a loss in preliminaryround play. Vey has one assist over Canada’s first three games.
White City’s Marsha Hudey, a long-track speedskater, finished 10th in the women’s 500 metres Sunday. She posted a time of 37.88 seconds. Four years ago in Sochi, Russia, Hudey — then a first-time Olympian — was 32nd in the 500m.
The Kevin Koe-skipped Canadian men’s curling team, including Regina-born lead Ben Hebert, lost 9-7 in 11 ends to the United States on Monday. A third consecutive defeat left Canada with a 4-3 record.
On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., Saskatchewan time, Regina snowboarder Mark McMorris is to take part in men’s big air qualifications. He is coming off a bronze-medalwinning effort in men’s slopestyle. The men’s big air final is Friday at 7 p.m., Saskatchewan time.
Moose Jaw’s Ben Coakwell is to compete in men’s four-man bobsled heats on Friday and Saturday.
