Saskatoon’s Clark scores in Olympic semifinal win

Saskatoon’s Emily Clark scored her first Olympic goal Monday to help Canada blank the Olympic Athletes from Russia 5-0 in a women’s hockey semifinal at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchan­g, South Korea.

Clark scored at 2:30 of the third period to give Canada a 4-0 lead.

Canada is to meet the United States in the gold-medal game, which is scheduled for Wednesday at 10:10 p.m., Saskatchew­an time. The Americans defeated Finland 5-0 in the other semifinal.

The Canadian roster also includes Brigitte Lacquette of Mallard, Man., who has family ties to Cote First Nation (near Yorkton). Lacquette once represente­d the Yorkton Tribal Council at the Saskatchew­an First Nations Winter Games.

The Canadian team is shooting for its fifth consecutiv­e Olympic gold medal.

In men’s hockey, Team Canada — including Linden Vey of Wakaw — is set to play in a quarter-final Wednesday (6:10 a.m., Saskatchew­an time). Canada had two victories and a loss in preliminar­yround play. Vey has one assist over Canada’s first three games.

White City’s Marsha Hudey, a long-track speedskate­r, finished 10th in the women’s 500 metres Sunday. She posted a time of 37.88 seconds. Four years ago in Sochi, Russia, Hudey — then a first-time Olympian — was 32nd in the 500m.

The Kevin Koe-skipped Canadian men’s curling team, including Regina-born lead Ben Hebert, lost 9-7 in 11 ends to the United States on Monday. A third consecutiv­e defeat left Canada with a 4-3 record.

On Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., Saskatchew­an time, Regina snowboarde­r Mark McMorris is to take part in men’s big air qualificat­ions. He is coming off a bronze-medalwinni­ng effort in men’s slopestyle. The men’s big air final is Friday at 7 p.m., Saskatchew­an time.

Moose Jaw’s Ben Coakwell is to compete in men’s four-man bobsled heats on Friday and Saturday.
