Two amateur events in the cards

Local boxing fans are in for a treat in the weeks ahead with two major amateur events on the agenda.

The Lonsdale Boxing Club will present Battle of the Prairies XIX — an Olympic-style card — on March 16 and March 18.

Male and female boxers from Western Canada will face opponents from Ireland.

The March 16 card is to be held at the Conexus Arts Centre, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The March 18 bouts, the first of which is slated for 1 p.m., will take place at the Lonsdale Boxing Club (1361 Halifax St.)

On May 4, the 25th Ken Goff Memorial Boxing Classic is to be held.

Male and female members of Canada’s national team are to face opponents from the United States at the Credit Union EventPlex. Rematches will be held May 6 during the Brandt Cup.

Individual tickets, which are $25, can be purchased at the Regina Boxing Club (1400 McIntyre St.), beginning on March 1.

Tables with eight seats, including dinner service, are on sale. They can be purchased by calling 306-536-5707 or emailing info@reginaboxi­ngclub.ca. Jacksonvil­le Jaguars, New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys. Two members of the University of Regina Cougars women’s basketball team — Kyanna Giles and Charlotte Kot — are Canada West all-stars.

Giles was named a first-team all-star. Kot earned third-team recognitio­n.

Also, the Cougars’ Carolina Goncalves was named to the conference’s all-rookie team.

The Cougars are playing host to the University of Calgary Dinos in a best-of-three Canada West semifinal.

Game 1 was scheduled for Thursday at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. A third game, if necessary, will be played Saturday.

In men’s basketball, the Cougars’ Brian Ofori was named a thirdteam all-star.

Twelve members of the Cougars are to compete in the U Sports wrestling championsh­ips to be held Friday and Saturday at Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

The Cougars’ male representa­tives at nationals will be Lucas Hoffert, Nathen Schmidt, Waylon Decoteau, Jordan Tholl, Joshua Zimroz and Adam Hendrickso­n.

The U of R’s female contingent will consist of Amber Wiebe, Miki Rowbottom, Inga Hammer, Jessica Rabet, Tina Trombley and Rachel Evans.

Figure skater Tristan Taylor of Regina is the Sask Sport Inc. athlete of the month for January.

Taylor finished fifth among 18 competitor­s in the novice men’s division at the Canadian Tire National Skating Championsh­ips in Vancouver. He had placed 19th at his previous national competitio­n held in December.

Campbell Tartans linebacker Josh

White has been named to Canada’s 45-player roster for the Internatio­nal Federation of American Football world junior championsh­ip to be held in Mexico City in July.

The Tartans’ Jaxon Ford, a defensive back, is among 10 players on Canada’s reserve roster.

The Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s

announced the signings of internatio­nal receivers Jacoby Ford and Shaq Evans on Thursday.

Ford, 30, spent seven weeks on the Riders’ practice roster in 2017. The Oakland Raiders originally selected him in the fourth round (108th overall) of the 2010 NFL draft. He went on to play 38 regular-season games over four seasons in the NFL, spent with the Raiders, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans.

Evans, 26, was selected by the Jets in the fourth round (115th overall) of the 2014 NFL draft. Over the 2015 and 2016 seasons, he was on the practice rosters of the
