Action heating up in WHL’s East

The race for the WHL’s Eastern Conference regular-season title looks like it is going down to the wire.

The Moose Jaw Warriors and Swift Current Broncos are tied with 91 points after Wednesday’s result — the Broncos’ 4-2 victory over the visiting Warriors.

Moose Jaw has a 44-12-1-2 record. Swift Current, which has played two more games than Moose Jaw, is 43-13-4-1.

Prior to Wednesday ’s game, the Broncos moved up one spot — to fourth — in the weekly CHL top-10 rankings. Moose Jaw remained at second.

Artyom Minulin was named the first star of Wednesday’s game after a three-assist performanc­e. The Broncos got goals from Colby Sissons, Beck Malenstyn, Max Patterson and Aleksi Heponiemi. Swift Current’s Glenn Gawdin registered an assist to increase his league-leading points total to 112.

Jayden Halbgewach­s — with his league-leading 57th goal — and Tanner Jeannot scored for Moose Jaw, which got 21 saves from Brody Willms. The Broncos’ Stuart Skinner stopped 37 shots.

The Warriors are to return to action Saturday against the Regina Pats (7 p.m., Mosaic Place) before facing the host Saskatoon Blades on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Broncos begin a three-game Alberta swing by opposing the Red Deer Rebels. Swift Current also visits the Edmonton Oil Kings (Sunday) and Calgary Hitmen (Tuesday).

The final Warriors-Broncos meeting of the regular season is March 10 in Moose Jaw.
