Weller posts shutout in Rebels’ playoff opener

Chantel Weller made 23 saves for the shutout as the Regina Rebels blanked the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats 3-0 in Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League playoff action Monday.

Tavia Terry, Miranda Hatt and Lauren Focht scored for Regina at the Co-operators Centre in the opening game of a best-of-five quarter-final.

Game 2 is set for Wednesday, 8 p.m., at Swift Current’s Fairview Arena. The third game is scheduled for Saturday, 1:30 p.m., at the Cooperator­s Centre.

The Regina Pat Canadians are to play host to the Yorkton RawTec Maulers on Wednesday in Game 3 of a best-of-five Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League quarter-final.

Faceoff is set for 8 p.m., at the Cooperator­s Centre.

Yorkton tied the series at 1-1 on Monday by registerin­g a 3-2 doubleover­time victory at Farrell Agencies Arena, where Jackson Berezowski scored the winning goal.

Reid Arnold and Aiden Bulych also scored for Yorkton. Taylor Halbgewach­s and Parker Hendren replied for Regina. The University of Regina Cougars remain at second in the weekly U Sports women’s basketball rankings.

The Carleton University Ravens, who had a 23-0 regular-season record, are in top spot after receiving 562 points — including 45 firstplace votes — in the coaches’ poll.

Regina (18-2) received 512 points, including two first-place votes.

The University of Saskatchew­an Huskies (17-3) moved up one spot, to sixth.

The Cougars are to meet the Huskies on Friday in the Canada West championsh­ip game (7 p.m., Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport).

Satomi Togawa, a member of the Cougars women’s volleyball team,

was named a Canada West secondteam all-star Tuesday.

With 875 assists, she finished third in the conference, and her 250 digs placed her second among all setters in Canada West.

Togawa’s teammate, Jessica Lerminiaux, was named to the Canada West all-rookie team.

In men’s volleyball, Huskies outside hitter Dylan Mortensen — who is from Swift Current — was named to the all-rookie team.

Terry Pavely will be the head coach of Saskatchew­an’s female (under-18) hockey team at the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

Pavely is the Swift Current Diamond Energy Wildcats’ head coach.

Saskatchew­an’s male (under-16) team will be coached by Reginaborn Gordon Burnett, who is an assistant coach with the WHL’s Kootenay Ice.

The Canada Winter Games appointmen­ts were made by the Saskatchew­an Hockey Associatio­n. The Balgonie Greenall Griffins edged the Thom Trojans 64-62 in Regina Intercolle­giate Basketball League senior girls action Monday.

Greenall’s Trinity Todd and Thom’s Hannah Wilkinson each had 20 points.

ciation’s youth indoor six-a-side champions were decided on the weekend in Moose Jaw.

The victorious sides were Swift Current United (under-17 girls), Moose Jaw Excelsior FC (under-17 boys), the Lloydminst­er Meridian Rustlers (under-15 girls) and Melfort Internatio­nale (under-15 boys).
