50 years of French at the University of Regina
This year marks the 50th anniversary of Francophone presence at the University of Regina (U of R). La Cité, the university’s newest academic unit, and the Bac en education francaise program at the Faculty of Education are the Francophonie’s proud representatives at the U of R.
University students can enrol in French Education, Francophone Intercultural Studies, and, starting this September, a bilingual Nursing degree. The University also offers courses in French in different subjects such as Indigenous studies, mathematics, and music to match the interests of its broad student population.
The U of R now welcomes over 120 full-time students studying in French, mainly from Saskatchewan. Students can enjoy a full immersive experience at La Cité by participating in various cultural events, including those of an on-campus Research Centre devoted to the study of Francophone communities in minority settings.
La Cité is also open to the general public through its French Training Centre, offering language courses for adults to learn and develop their skills.
La Cité’s vision for the future is to keep developing a diverse course offering and to ultimately create enthusiastic role-models that will inspire the next generation to embrace the bilingualism that makes Canada such a wonderful place!
