Riders ink DL Steele

The Saskatchew­an Roughrider­s have re-signed national defensive lineman Eddie Steele to a contract for the 2018 CFL season.

The 29-year-old University of Manitoba product is entering his eighth CFL campaign. He started all 18 regular-season games for the Riders in 2017, recording 23 defensive tackles and one sack.

The Campbell Tartans and LeBoldus Golden Suns are to meet Thursday in both of the Regina Intercolle­giate Basketball League’s junior Tier 1 finals.

Games are set for 6:15 p.m. ( girls) and 8 p.m. ( boys) at Luther College High School’s Semple Gymnasium.

The junior Tier 2 finals are scheduled for Monday at Harvest City Christian Academy.

The Balfour Bears and Balgonie Greenall Griffins are to meet in the junior girls championsh­ip game at 6:15 p.m. The junior boys final, between the Regina Christian Grizzlies and Laval Lion, is set for 8 p.m.

The Regina Rebels’ season ended Tuesday when the Saskatoon Stars completed a sweep of a Saskatchew­an Female Midget AAA Hockey League playoff series.

Saskatoon won 3-1 at home to end a best-of-five semifinal in three games. Ashley Messier scored two goals and assisted on Saskatoon’s other tally by Anna Leschyshyn. Jenna Merk scored for Regina.

The other semifinal is between the Notre Dame Hounds and Prince Albert Northern Bears. The series was tied 1-1 heading into Wednesday’s game in Prince Albert. Game 4 is on Saturday, 1 p.m. at Duncan McNeill Arena in Wilcox.

Arik Weersink made 46 saves for the shutout Tuesday as the Weyburn Red Wings registered a 2-0 SJHL playoff victory over the host Melville Millionair­es. William Cruise and Tyran Brown were the goal-scorers as Weyburn tied the best-of-three first-round series at 1-1. Game 3 was to be played Wednesday at Crescent Point Place.

On Wednesday, a third and deciding game of a first-round series between the Notre Dame Hounds and Flin Flon Bombers was to be played at Duncan McNeill Arena.

Two of the league’s best-of-seven quarter-final matchups have been set. The Estevan Bruins will face the Kindersley Klippers and the Melfort Mustangs will oppose the Kindersley Klippers. The Nipawin Hawks and Battleford­s North Stars are awaiting the outcomes of the two first-round series.
