Red Wings trail 2-0 in SJHL series
The Weyburn Red Wings are headed home looking to bounce back from a 2-0 deficit in their best-ofseven SJHL quarter-final series against the Battlefords North Stars.
The Red Wings opened the series on Friday with a 5-1 loss in Battlefords before dropping a 6-5 decision in Game 2 on Saturday. Stars captain Layne Young had a goal and two assists in each contest.
Game 3 goes Tuesday in Weyburn.
Elsewhere, the Nipawin Hawks opened up a 2-0 lead in their series versus the Flin Flon Bombers.
Nipawin posted home-ice wins of 5-1 and 3-1 on the weekend. Brandon Arnold had a goal and three assists in the opener before adding a pair of goals in the rematch.
Game 3 is slated for Tuesday in Flin Flon.
The host Estevan Bruins also assumed a 2-0 lead in their best-ofseven matchup with the Kindersley Klippers, who lost 3-1 and 3-2. Zach Goberis had a goal and an assist in Game 1 and added a goal and two helpers on Saturday.
The series resumes Tuesday in Kindersley.
Meanwhile, the Melfort Mustangs and Humboldt Broncos are tied 1-1 after two games in Melfort. Humboldt’s Nick Shumlanski had two goals and two assists Friday in a 7-2 win. Melfort’s Rock Ruschkowski scored a pair in Saturday’s rematch — a 6-3 win for the Mustangs.
Game 3 goes Tuesday in Humboldt.
The Saskatoon duo of Chaelynn Kitz and Brayden Stewart beat DondaLee Deis and Kalin Deis of Fox Valley 8-1 on Sunday to win the provincial mixed doubles curling championship in Moose Jaw.
Kitz and Stewart advance to the national mixed doubles championship, March 28 to April 1 in Leduc, Alta.
The Regina QCVC Rage 13U girls volleyball team finished second at a Sask Cup tournament in Warman on the weekend.
Regina lost 25-18 and 28-26 in the tier 2 final against the Prince Albert Optimist Toppers Peligro.
At the 18U event in Lloydminster, Regina CVC lost 11-25, 26-24, 15-6 to Turtleford Thundering Hill VC in the tier 2 final.
The Saskatchewan Roughriders have re-signed national receiver Brett Blaszko and national kicker Brett Lauther.
Blaszko, who’s heading into his third CFL season, played two games for Saskatchewan last year as a backup receiver while Lauther spent some time on the team’s practice roster.
