City shouldn’t look at acquiring GTH

-

I usually have a vastly different opinion than that of Murray Mandryk, but in the case of the Sask. Party proposing to off-load a boondoggle of their own making onto the people of Regina I totally agree with him (Dumping the GTH on the City of Regina doesn’t solve anything, March 23).

There is no possible advantage to the City of Regina to acquire this industrial land, namely the Global Transportation Hub, and its associated debt. The Sask. Party government used taxpayer money to vastly overpay for land it is unable to re-sell even at a loss to entice new tenants. In an effort to make it appear viable, the most recent parcels of land were sold to its own Crown corporations.

This provincial government has shown it wants to divest itself of money-losers such as STC.

The GTH doesn’t even serve the public at large, only a few corporations. I implore Regina city council to Just Say No and not even enter into discussion with the province.

Council can even say: “Thanks, but no thanks.” Regina taxpayers already pay to much.

The GTH will live on without being owned by this city. Why make it a burden to city finances? Brian Eberle, Regina

It’s troubling to watch as a growing number of Sask Party MLAs resign their seats, triggering by-elections that will cost more than $2 million. These are the people responsible for the disastrous 2017 budget that cut funding for schools. Sid Wonitowy, Yorkton
