Capitals aiming for second straight PJHL title

The Extreme Hockey Regina Capitals are to play host to the Del isle Chiefs on Sunday in Game 5 of the Prairie Junior Hockey League final.

Regina led the best-of-seven championsh­ip series 2-1 heading into Friday night’s game in Delisle. Sunday’s game is set for 2:15 p.m., at the Al Ritchie Memorial Centre.

The Capitals are the defending league champions.

The Estevan Bruins are off to the SJHL’s championsh­ip series.

Estevan defeated the host Battleford­s North Stars 6-2 on Thursday to end a best-of-seven semifinal in five games.

Kaelan Holt led the Bruins with two goals and two assists.

The Notre Dame Hounds, champions of the Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League, blanked the Kenora Thistles (representi­ng Northern Ontario) 11-0 on Thursday at the Telus Cup west regional qualifier in Thunder Bay, Ont.

The line of Luke Mylymok, Cordel Larson and Ryker Evans combined for 13 points. Mylymok and Larson had had tricks. Evans added one goal in Notre Dame’s opening game at the tournament.

Aaron Randazzo made 11 saves for the shutout.

The winner of Sunday ’s final advances to the Telus Cup — the Canadian midget AAA championsh­ip — which is slated for April 23-29 in Sudbury, Ont.

Emma Spence and Michael McGillivra­y, both of the Regina Optimist Dolphins, set provincial long-course records Thursday at the Canadian swimming championsh­ips.

Spence won the 15-17 girls 200-metre breaststro­ke in a record time of two minutes 34.66 seconds. Her time was also a provincial senior women’s record.

McGillivra­y was eighth in the 1517 boys 1,500m freestyle while establishi­ng an age-group standard of 16:02.16.

Nationals continue until Sunday in Montreal. The University of Regina Rams have announced the recruitmen­t of 19 offensive players for the 2018 Canada West football season.

The additions include quarterbac­k Josh Donnelly (from the LeB oldus Golden Suns) and receivers Bennett Stusek (Campbell Tartans), Kris Calcutt (Regina Thunder) and Sam Mike (Saskatoon Hilltops).

The other newcomers are offensive linemen Nathan Raymond, Isaiah Breland, Brayden Moroz, Matthew Robinson, Zach Miller, Brodan Rempel, Apete Tuiloma and Brayden Vandermeer, receivers Shamar Donelson, Dallen Keen, Tyler Lalonde, Riley Boersma and Matt Rivers, fullback Colin Stumborg and running back Jayse Easton.

The Rams’ spring camp is set for Saturday and Sunday at the Credit Union EventPlex. Practices are to be held from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m., both days.
