Bunhead brings back scrunchies

- ALEESHA HARRIS aharris@postmedia.com

There was likely a time, oh, let’s say around 2005 or so, when you finally cleared out that overflowing bucket of hair scrunchies hiding in the cabinet underneath your bathroom sink.

The soft, frilly hair-holders have long been relegated to private, in-home use rather than an outside outfit addition.

That is, until now.

Believe it or not, scrunchies are back. And the Vancouver-based brand Bunhead is ready to see the soft-sided hair accessories thrust squarely back into the sartorial spotlight. Courtney Peters, the brand founder, chatted with Postmedia about bringing back scrunchies, why Bunhead was never meant to be a “thing ” and creating a brand that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Q Why did you start Bunhead?

A Well, to be honest, Bunhead was never supposed to be a thing. The idea came very organically one night with some girlfriends over a bottle of wine and a sewing machine. The excitement spread when I posted scrunchie photos on Instagram and friends started placing orders. One of my best friends encouraged me to launch the brand at her Seattle Business Babes launch party and we had a great response, so I enlisted the help of my industrious mom to turn this crazy idea into a business. Once we realized it was a thing, my husband Thom designed and engineered our online presence and we’ve been in high gear ever since. We actually just celebrated our twomonth anniversary!

Q How did you come up with the name?

A I have to give credit to my friend on this one. She yelled it out when we were trying on our first prototypes and it stuck. I love it because it sounds fun, cheeky and not too serious, which is how we like to think of ourselves.

Q What do you sell?

A We sell deluxe hair scrunchies, handmade in Vancouver. We pride ourselves in only using material sourced from local shops.

Q Who is your target customer? A Bunhead is for anyone who wants to upgrade their bun game.

Q Any plans to expand?

A Never say never! But we love this niche and there’s a lot of room to be creative with the humble scrunchie. We give our IG followers a heads up on new releases, promos, and contests — so it pays to follow us and #beabunhead.

Q Are scrunchies really back?

A Yes. And we couldn’t be more excited! Scrunchies are the perfect way to spice up an outfit without damaging your hair.

Q . Where can people check them out?

A At shopbunhead.com. You can also follow our Instagram @mybunhead.

Q How much do the Bunhead scrunchies retail for? A Our scrunchies retail from $12 to $14 plus shipping.

Q What’s next?

A We just launched our Skinny Series for women with short/ fine hair who still want to rock Bunhead scrunchies. We’re also looking forward to launching something ridiculously cute for Mother’s Day. Stay tuned!
