-

Regina Pats forward Matt Bradley is the Eastern Conference nominee for the WHL’s humanitarian of the year award.

Ty Ronning of the Vancouver Giants is the Western Conference finalist. The winner will be presented with the Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy at the WHL’s award ceremony, May 2 in Red Deer.

A WHL news release issued Wednesday said “Bradley has gone above and beyond for those in his local Western Hockey League market and the league as a whole.”

Bradley pledged $5 of his own money for every point he scored during October in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In addition to raising $85 based on his offensive production, he campaigned further and generated a total of $3,595. The season before, as a member of the Medicine Hat Tigers, he raised $565 for cancer awareness.

Bradley also stepped up to support the Pats’ Canadian Mental Health Association night.

In addition, he visited 15 schools to read to students and promote healthy lifestyles. Along those lines, he helped out with the Ranch Ehrlo Outdoor Hockey League.

In his hometown of Surrey, B.C., Bradley also visits a local school at which his mother is the vice-principal, delivering a message about healthy living and goal-setting.

The WHL also announced its scholastic player of the year finalists — Chase Wouters of the Saskatoon Blades (Eastern Conference) and Ty Smith of the Spokane Chiefs (Western Conference). Both players, coincidentally, are from Lloydminster, Alta. WARRIORS WIN Brett Howden scored at 2:29 of overtime to give the Moose Jaw Warriors a 4-3 WHL playoff victory over the host Swift Current Broncos on Tuesday.

Moose Jaw assumed a 2-1 lead in a best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal. Game 4 was Wednesday night in Swift Current. The fifth game is set for Friday, 7 p.m., at Mosaic Place.

The Warriors’ Brayden Burke forced overtime Tuesday by scoring at 5:11 of the third. The goal was Burke’s second of the game and ninth of the post-season. Jayden Halbgewachs also scored for the Warriors.

Glenn Gawdin, Artyom Minulin and Matteo Gennaro replied for Swift Current, which got 27 saves from Stuart Skinner. Moose Jaw’s Brody Willms stopped 20 shots.
