Haugan shortlisted for NHL’s Willie O’Ree honour

-

Deceased Humboldt Broncos head coach and general manager Darcy Haugan is a finalist for the NHL’s Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award.

Haugan, who died in the April 6 team bus crash that claimed 16 lives, is one of three finalists.

Voting is open to the general public and done online with the deadline set for 11 a.m. Saskatchewan time on June 1.

The O’Ree Award — named after the NHL’s first black player — goes to a person who has made a positive impact on his or her community, culture or society through hockey.

The nominating write-up noted Haugan’s contributions to Humboldt, his life-changing effect on young players and his strong faith in God and its impact on his dealings with others.

“Darcy believed strongly that hockey is not about making hockey players, it’s about making amazing human beings,” it said in the write-up.

“He did just that, building up young leaders who also happened to develop strong hockey skills along the way. His presence would fill the room and love for the game was undeniable.”

Also nominated is Debbie Bland, who has made a large contribution to female hockey in Etobicoke, Ont., and Neal Henderson, who created a successful and long-running hockey program in inner-city Washington, D.C.

Voting is open now and can be done at nhl.com/OReeAward.
