Saskatchew­an celebrates landmark gold in water polo

Saskatchew­an won the under-19 women’s final at the National Championsh­ip League water polo finals in Montreal on Saturday.

The squad claimed its first national title by defeating the Pacific Storm 13-7 in the gold-medal game. Saskatchew­an got four goals from Blaire McDowell, three each from Paige Donald and Breanna Dupperon, two from Carissa Semple and one from Devyn Smith.

Regina-born Chris Van Os- Shaw has been named the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s national player of the year.

Van Os- Shaw was honoured following a standout season with the Spruce Grove Saints.

He led the Alberta Junior Hockey League in goals (51) and points (97) while playing in 59 games and was named the AJHL’s MVP.

The first AJHLer to reach 50 goals since Mark Letestu scored an even 50 times for the 2005-06 Bonnyville Pontiacs, Van Os- Shaw is to attend the University of Minnesota State-Mankato on an athletic scholarshi­p.

O’Neill won the team title at the Regina High Schools Athletic Associatio­n track and field championsh­ips, which were held Wednesday and Thursday at the Canada Games Athletics Complex.

The individual aggregate winners were Kailee Woitas of Miller and Ella Perras of Martin (who were tied for first in the midget girls category), Rick Cyro Poligrates of O’Neill (midget boys), Mattea Hamilton of Sheldon-Williams ( junior girls), Kian Khandehroo of Riffel ( junior boys), Kaylee Tymo of Thom (senior girls) and Vaughn Taylor of Riffel (senior boys).

Top competitor­s at the city meet advance to the SHSAA track and field championsh­ips, set for Friday and Saturday in Prince Albert.

Regina’s Michael Middlemiss posted the fastest 20-kilometre time at the 2018 Fort Qu’Appelle Lions Echo Lake Road Race: one hour 13 minutes 29 seconds.

Tracy Fisher of Regina was the fastest female over 20km (1:33:12). She also won the senior women’s 20km category.

The other event winners were Shaun Hesse of Regina (master men’s 20km), Gerry Nagy of Weyburn (senior master men’s 20km), Tyra Dickson of Moose Jaw (35-44 women’s 20km), Dylan McNab of Punnichy (native 20km), Johnny Venture of Fort Qu’Appelle (local 20km), Lysle Mroske of Pilot Butte (open men’s 10km), Kaytlyn Criddle of Regina (open women’s 10km) and Sistene Yuzicappi of Fort Qu’Appelle (14-and-under 10km).

Darrian Bellegarde struck out 12 in six innings to lead the Little Black Bear Blues to a 9-6 victory over the Muskowekwa­n Pride in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Tuesday.

Also on Tuesday, the Bulyea Rustlers and Standing Buffalo Dakotas played to a 5-5 tie.

On Wednesday, the Moose Jaw Canadians edged Standing Buffalo 2-1 and the Earl Grey Rockets defeated the Piapot Padres 10-0.

The Sherry Anderson curling team, from Delisle, has received the Sask Sport Inc. athlete-of-themonth award for April.

Anderson (skip), Patricia Hersikorn (third), Brenda Goertzen (second) and Anita Silvernagl­e (lead) won the world senior women’s curling championsh­ip. The team was coached by Bill Tschirhart.

The Regina Rugby Union began its season Friday with two senior men’s 15s matches. The Campion Grads defeated the Regina Condors 39-29 and the Regina Highlander­s edged the Regina Rogues 29-26.

Sunday’s scheduled Western Women’s Canadian Football League game between the Regina Riot and Winnipeg Wolfpack was cancelled when the latter team had to forfeit.
