White receives U Sports award

Former University of Regina director of athletics Dick White was recognized Monday during the U Sports Honours Awards Gala in Vancouver.

White received the Austin Matthews Award, presented annually to an individual who has made an outstandin­g contributi­on to interunive­rsity sport as demonstrat­ed by long-term commitment and leadership.

White began his involvemen­t with University of Regina Cougars athletics in 1981. He was the athletic director from 1995 until his retirement in 2014.

Optimist Dolphins set provincial records at the Mel Zajac Jr. Internatio­nal Swim Meet on the weekend in Vancouver.

Competing in the 15-17 female age division, she posted record times of 1:13:00 (100-metre breaststro­ke) and 2:22.05 (200m individual medley). Her time in the individual medley was a provincial 15-17 and senior women’s record.

The Regina Sonics under-14 boys

basketball team is about to compete on a national stage.

The Sonics are off to the Jr. NBA World Championsh­ip Canada regional final, to be held June 15 and 16 in St. Catharines, Ont.

The winner of the latter event will advance to the inaugural Jr. NBA World Championsh­ip, which is slated for Orlando, Fla., in August.

The Sonics earned a berth in the national event by defeating the host Junior Bisons from Winnipeg, 65-63 on Saturday. Regina’s Ben Klein was named the game’s most valuable player.

Troy Gordon had two home

runs and four RBI on Monday to help the Bulyea Rustlers defeat the Regina Gold 8-1 in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action.

George Flotre had three RBI. Winning pitcher Colin McLeod didn’t allow a run in four innings.

Also on Monday at Rambler Park, the Piapot Wolfpack defeated the Piapot Padres 7-3.

Droppin Dimez won the Grade

6 girls title at the Regina Community Basketball Associatio­n’s Spring Classic three-on-three tournament on the weekend at Luther College High School.

The victorious team consisted of Aija McGregor, Mackenzie Kot, Emilie Gatin and Maddi Gray.

President’s Cup all-star rugby matches,

featuring sides from southern and northern Saskatchew­an, were played Sunday at Regina Rugby Park.

The South won the women’s match, 75-32. In the men’s match, the North won 57-22.
