Sask. rivals battle for championsh­ip

The Regina Riot is to play the Saskatoon Valkyries in the Western Women’s Canadian Football League’s championsh­ip game on Sunday, 3 p.m., at Mosaic Stadium.

Tickets are $15. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.

A pre-game party is to be held at Confederat­ion Park from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Former Regina Leader-Post sports editor Gregg Drinnan is reporting in his Taking Note column that Dean Brockman will be the next head coach and general manager of the WHL’s Swift Current Broncos.

Brockman was the Saskatoon Blades’ head coach for the past two seasons.

He is in line to replace Manny Viveiros, who recently resigned from the Broncos to become an assistant coach with the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers.

The Regina Red Sox are to return to action Sunday against the Melville Millionair­es. The Western Major Baseball League game is set for 1 p.m., at Currie Field.

Regina was to play host to the Yorkton Cardinals on Friday.

On Thursday, the Red Sox extended their winning streak to three games by registerin­g a 7-4 victory in Yorkton. Jake Wilson had four hits, a run scored and a stolen base as Regina improved its record to 9-6.

The Canadian junior men’s fastball team is to play the Bulyea Rustlers in an exhibition doublehead­er July 2 at Kaplan Field. Games are set for 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Team Canada is preparing for the world junior men’s championsh­ip, to be held July 7-15 in Prince Albert. The Rustlers are preparing for the Canadian senior A men’s championsh­ip (Aug. 29-Sept 2 in Saint Croix, N.S.).

Admission will be $10 (adults) and $5 (students aged 13 to 17). Children 12 and under will be admitted free.

Shayse Cappo homered for Best Buds as they doubled the Rampage 12-6 in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Wednesday.

Also on Wednesday at Rambler Park, Drew Wilde got the win as the Earl Grey Rockets blanked the Piapot Wolfpack 13-0.

On Thursday, Darian Bellegarde struck out 11 in seven innings and helped his cause by hitting a home run as the Little Black Bear Blues defeated Silver Screen Sportswear 5-2.

As well, winning pitcher Dean Holoien homered as the Moose Jaw Canadians defeated the Moose Jaw Giants 7-3, and the Standing Buffalo Dakotas defeated the Regina Gold 6-1. The Dakotas got 14 strikeouts in seven innings from Dwayne Redman Jr., and a home run from Ernie Goodwill Jr.

Kelsey Briens was the winning pitcher for the Fusion in both ends of a Regina Ladies Softball Associatio­n doublehead­er Thursday.

Briens helped the Fusion shut out Piapot (9-0) and Dakota Winyan (7-0) at Douglas Park.

Gary Morin had a hole-in-one at the Joanne Goulet Golf Course on June 16.

He aced the 165-yard eighth hole, using a 5-iron.

The feat was witnessed by Harvey King and Linda Morin.

The Royal Regina defeated Deer Valley 114-76 in Regina and Area Match Play League competitio­n at the Royal Regina Golf Club on Thursday.
