Young man struck by vehicle in parking lot
Area residents expressed concern about an Albert Park-area parking lot in the wake of the death of a teenage boy Friday night.
Neighbours, who did not want to be named, said the parking area around the city’s South Leisure Centre and the Optimist Arena is a common gathering point for teens.
“It’s not uncommon for kids to kind of hang out there and show off their cars or whatever,” said one resident.
He and another man from the neighbourhood said their understanding was the teen, a 15-yearold male, had been killed in an accident that occurred in the parking area.
According to information from the Regina Police Service, officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Sunset Drive at 10:41 p.m. for a report of a single-vehicle collision involving a pedestrian. EMS took the teen to hospital, where he was confirmed to have died.
Police have not said whether charges have been or will be laid.
The boy’s family has been notified, but police are not releasing his identity at this time.
Area residents said they understood the accident involved a group of young friends.
One man said he believes the park should be locked up after 10 p.m.
“There’s no reason there shouldn’t be gates there …,” he said. “Every weekend, you’ve got 10 to 50 kids coming there.”
While he said there are normally no major problems that result, he felt this tragedy is an example of what can go wrong.
The incident is being investigated by city police in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Coroner. Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to contact city police at 306777-6500.
