Regina runner wins gold at national meet
Regina runner edges Moose Jaw’s Bosch to take under-20 men’s 400-metre event
Vaughn Taylor of Regina is a national champion.
Taylor won the under-20 men’s 400 metres Saturday at the Canadian track and field championships in Ottawa. He posted a time of 48.54 seconds. Hunter Bosch of Moose Jaw was second at 48.96.
On Sunday, Regina’s Chloe McEachern was part of a silvermedal-winning team in the under-20 women’s 4x400m relay. The quartet also included Skylar Smith of Lemberg, Tracy Towns of Winnipeg and Tia Lampo of Thunder Bay.
The Regina Red Sox are
playing host to the Moose Jaw Miller Express on Monday at Currie Field.
It’s the beginning of a threegame home stand that will also include meetings with the Medicine Hat Mavericks on Tuesday and Wednesday. The three games are scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
Regina, which is second in the Eastern Division, carried a 19-8 record into Sunday night’s road game against the first-place Weyburn Beavers (22-7).
The Brooks Bombers’ Riley MacDonald
set the WMBL’s single-season home-run record Saturday in a 14-12 loss to the host Melville Millionaires. MacDonald hit his 18th and 19th homers to move ahead of Jesse Sawyer, who had 18 roundtrippers for Lethbridge in 2011.
Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame
inductions were held Saturday in Swift Current.
Bill Hicke, Ron Delorme and Hayley Wickenheiser were added as players. Kelly Lovering was entered as a builder.
Also honoured were Lyle Wilhelm (official), Larry Johnson and Dennis Loeppky ( grassroots), and the 1987-88 Notre Dame Hounds (team). Hicke, Lovering and Loeppky were inducted posthumously.
Blake Buettner of Moose Jaw
and his wife, Renee Verge, were presented with the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association Merit Award — the organization’s highest honour — at the recent annual meeting in Moosomin.
Randy Clark of Moosomin was the other Merit Award recipient.
Fourteen individuals received Service Awards: Lance Ford (Regina), Derrick Huschi (Moose Jaw), Adam Jackson (Swift Current), Lance Morrison (Dinsmore), Jackie Verity (Carnduff ), Dean Harcourt (Kipling), John Svenson (Melville), Kelly Simpson (Melfort), Shannon Vey (Birch Hills), Ricky Block (Annaheim), Mark Andrews (Saskatoon), Vic Stynsky (North Battleford), Ken Morrell (Onion Lake) and Ralph Epp (Rosthern).
Winning pitcher Steve Kwasnicki struck
out six in three innings as the Regina Gold defeated the Piapot Padres 15-0 in Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League action Friday. Chris Bailey homered for the Gold at Rambler Park.
The Regina Rugby Union held
three women’s sevens matches Friday at Regina Rugby Park. The scores were: Regina Rage 22, Regina Rogues 14; Rage 39, Regina Condors 5; Rogues 45, Condors 5.
