Fringe performer seeking local musicians to join him on stage for improv show

After travelling 7,137 kilometres from Lisbon, Portugal, to the Queen City, Regina Fringe Festival performer Dandymouth is calling for local musicians to join him in his spoken word performances.

“It’s poetry, but it’s poetry performed, and that’s the difference,” said Dandymouth, the stage name of performer Gordon Fudge. “I bring it to life, and to bring it to life in a room as big as the one I’ve got, I bring a lot of technology as well.”

He is looking for local musicians — any instrument and any skill level — willing to join him during one or more of his performances, with no rehearsal required.

“(They need) two things: a little bit of bravery, and a lot of honesty. So, they’ve got to be brave enough to get up on stage without really knowing what I’m going to ask them to do,” he said.

The musician needs honesty to be able to play the first thing that comes to mind.

“Just do the first thing that comes into your head, and whatever it is, it’s right,” said Dandymouth. “There’s three little points in the show where two of us collaborate and two of us are creating and it’s happening in real time, and that’s fascinating because it’s improv.”

Having already done this type of performance in Lisbon, London and Montreal, Dandymouth said he’s always surprised by what the musician creates.

“It’s great for the audience to watch, but it’s also nice for me as well, and to just see where they take my work and where they take my words,” he said. “It not only adds another dimension, it adds another creative input.

“We fill the room with sound, we fill the room with words, and then we draw pictures in their heads.”

Dandymouth already has a musician lined up for Wednesday night, but is still seeking a musician to help with his Thursday, Friday and Saturday night shows. Interested musicians are asked to contact him as soon as possible by email at dandymouth@dandymouth.com.

As this is his first time visiting Regina, Dandymouth said he has been enjoying seeing the city and meeting its people.

“I’m pretty sure this is going to prove the nicest bunch of people I work with. It’s just the scale of the place, the feel of the place. It’s just magical,” he said.

Dandymouth’s performances are at the SaskExpress building on Pasqua Street on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., Thursday at 9 p.m., Friday at 6:15 p.m., Saturday at 3 p.m. and Sunday at 6:45 p.m.
