Love’s labours recalled

-

Actress Neve Campbell was in labour for nine days with her son Caspian.

The Guelph, Ont.-born Scream star talked about the inspiration behind her six-year-old son’s name during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night. She said she had endured a tough labour before she and actor boyfriend J.J. Feild welcomed Caspian into the world.

“When we were pregnant, we didn’t find out whether he was a girl or boy — even though I knew he was a boy, I just knew, it was an instinct — so we thought we’ll bring five boy names and five girl names to the hospital. We weren’t going to be at the hospital, we were going to do it at home and it didn’t work out, we ended up at the hospital,” she said.

“I was in labour for nine days. I know, I should have gone to the hospital sooner. It was really silly. Anyway, got to the hospital and then, after the nine days, we’d forgotten the list and it was the only name we could remember.”

Colbert asked if she was inspired by the fictional C.S. Lewis character Prince Caspian from the Narnia books, to which Campbell said she just really loved the name and wanted something unique, like hers.

In June, the Party of Five star announced on Instagram that she and Feild had adopted a boy named Raynor earlier in the year.

Campbell is currently promoting Skyscraper, opposite star Dwayne Johnson, her first leading role in more than 10 years. She told Colbert she was out of the spotlight for so long because she “needed a minute” to catch her breath after the success she found in her 20s.

“It got to a level also where the kinds of things that I was being offered were not the kinds of things I want to do,” said Campbell, 44. “I just wasn’t interested in the scripts and I was feeling a bit unhappy with the things that were coming to me. And I was feeling a little bored with the whole thing. I thought, ‘I want a change.’ So, I moved to London.”
