Saskatchewan downs Ontario to earn spot in Football Canada Cup final
Saskatchewan and Alberta are to meet in Sunday’s final at the Football Canada Cup in Calgary.
In semifinals Thursday, Saskatchewan defeated Ontario 328, and Alberta posted a 24-13 victory over Quebec, the defending champion.
Saskatchewan scored 32 unanswered points after Ontario assume dan8-0lead. Saskatchewan’s game MVPS were Regina’s Keegan Kaytor (offence) and Saskatoon’s Ramsey Derbas (defence).
Team Saskatchewan has won its first two games at the under-18 tournament.
Team Canada — including Jaxon
Ford, Josh White and Tanner Schmekel, all of Regina — is to play Mexico in Sunday’s gold-medal game at the IFAF world junior football championship in Mexico City.
Canada advanced to the final by defeating Japan 28-22 on Thursday. Mexico downed the United States 33-6 in the other semifinal.
Sunday’s final will be livestreamed on Cbcsports.ca, beginning at 7 p.m.
Kade Johnson of Yorkton won the Saskatchewan amateur men’s golf championship Thursday in Saskatoon. Johnson, 19, shot a 9-underpar 207 over three rounds, including 6-under-par 66s in each of the final two rounds.
Humboldt’s Michael Herperger was two shots off the pace, at 209. Saskatoon’s David Stewart, who led the field after the first and second rounds, was third at 210.
Herperger won the provincial mid-amateur championship, for players 25 and over.
Michael Mcgillivray of the Regina
Optimist dolphins finished second in the senior men’s 1,500-metre freestyle in a provincial-recordsetting performance Thursday at the Canadian swimming trials in Edmonton.
Mcgillivray, 15, had a time of 15 minutes 44.31 seconds to break the 15-17 age group provincial record of 16:02.16 that he set earlier this year. He also erased the Saskatchewan senior record of 15:54.74, set by Greg Streppel in 1988.
As well, Mcgillivray was selected to compete in the world junior open-water championships, which are to be held in eilat, Israel in september.
The Grey Cup will be at Sports Clips’ Grasslands location (4617 Gordon Rd.) on July 28 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Fans can have a picture taken with the trophy in return for the donation of a non-perishable food item, which will assist the Regina and District Food Bank.
The Regina Red Sox are to begin a three-game home stand Sunday against the Weyburn Beavers. The first pitch is set for 2:05 p.m., at Currie Field.
Regina will then play host to the Swift Current 57s (on Monday) and Yorkton Cardinals (Tuesday). Both games are scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
The Red Sox carried a 22-16 record and a three-game losing streak into Friday’s road game against the Edmonton Prospects.
Brad Flanagan and Lyndon Graff
homered for Silver Screen Sportswear in its 6-1 Western Cycle Rambler Park Fastball League victory over the Regina Gold on Thursday.
Al Muhle struck out nine while registering a seven-inning, complete-game victory.
Also on Thursday, winning pitcher Dale Garthus struck out eight in five innings as the Moose Jaw Giants blanked the Standing Buffalo Dakotas 12-0.
Aimee Unchulenko homered for the
Rampage as it posted a 6-4 victory over the Lumsden Under-19s in Regina Ladies Softball Association action Thursday. Sarah Beatty was the winning pitcher.
Also on Thursday at the Douglas Park diamonds, the Thunder edged Lumsden 5-4 and Iskotew downed the Fusion 10-3.
The Regina Gold Rush is the provincial men’s Division E ball hockey champion. The team captured the championship July 5 in Saskatoon after winning the city title on June 28.
