Cyclist dragged by SUV, suffers serious injuries

-

A 47-year-old cyclist sustained serious injuries after being thrown from his bike and dragged by an SUV on Friday afternoon.

Regina police are continuing the investigation into the collision, which happened at the intersection of Dewdney Avenue and Retallack Street around 3 p.m.

An initial investigation of the event indicated a cyclist was run over by a vehicle. Evidence collected by officers includes video from a nearby business.

At this time, according to a police press release Monday, it appears the vehicle was travelling southbound on Retallack Street and stopped at the intersection with Dewdney before proceeding right, or westbound.

According to police, the cyclist was travelling eastbound, moving at a relatively high rate of speed, on the north sidewalk of Dewdney Avenue. The cyclist attempted to stop for the vehicle, but only the front brake of the bike worked.

The front wheel of the bicycle skidded and the cyclist was thrown in front of the SUV as the driver was making his turn.

The victim was dragged for a short distance before emerging from under the moving vehicle. The man was taken to hospital by emergency medical services.

The 57-year-old driver was initially taken into custody and later released.

Police initially described the male cyclist’s injuries as lifethreatening.
