Red Sox ready for WMBL playoffs series
The Regina Red Sox are preparing for Tuesday ’s Western Major Baseball League playoff opener against the host Swift Current 57’s.
Game time is 7:05 p.m. at Mitchell Field. The best-of-five series will continue Wednesday in Swift Current. The series will then move to Regina for a 7:05 game on Thursday and, if necessary, Friday. If a fifth game is required, it will be played Saturday in Swift Current.
Regina finished third in the sixteam Eastern Division, posting a 26-21 record. Swift Current (2820) was second.
On Sunday, the Red Sox defeated the Weyburn Beavers 7-3 in the regular-season finale for both teams. The contest was witnessed by 1,215 spectators at Currie Field.
Wesley Moss had a double, a walk and two RBIS for the Red Sox. Jahshua Jones also drove in two runs for Regina.
Wade Weinburger had a two-run homer for Weyburn (37-11), which won the Eastern Division title. The Beavers are to meet the fourthplace Moose Jaw Miller Express in Round 1.
Matthew Syrgiannis of the Regina Optimist Dolphins won a bronze medal in the 14-15 boys 1.5-kilometre open-water swim on the weekend at the Canadian junior swimming championships at St. Malo Provincial Park in Manitoba.
Syrgiannis posted a time of 18 minutes, 12 seconds.
Jess Lawrence of Regina’s Flatland Swimming won all eight of her individual events in the girls nine10 age group on the weekend at the Helena Lions Swim Team mixer meet in Montana.
Flatland’s Landon Bouvier, competing in the boys 13-and-over division, won seven events.
Emily Choboter and Taylor Hebert, both of the Dolphins, each won four events in the girls 13-andover division.
Saskatchewan won the female division at the Western Canada under-16 flag football championships in Regina on Sunday.
In the gold-medal game, Saskatchewan blanked Team West White 38-0. Saskatchewan’s Janaya Dorsch was named the defensive player of the game.
British Columbia won the male division.
The Saskatchewan senior AA tier 1 baseball championship is scheduled for Friday to Sunday at Optimist Park.
The Regina Trappers, Moose Jaw Padres, Marysburg Royals and Saskatoon Outlaws are to compete.
