Red Sox set to host Weyburn on Thursday

-

The Regina Red Sox are to play host to the Weyburn Beavers on Thursday in Game 4 of the Western Major Baseball League’s Eastern Division final.

The best-of-five series was tied 1-1 entering Wednesday night’s game at Currie Field, where Thursday’s first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Regina knotted the series Tuesday by winning 6-5 in 11 innings before 508 spectators at Tom Laing Park.

Wesley Moss scored on a wild pitch for what proved to be the winning run.

In the 11th inning, Moss singled and then stole his fourth base of the game before crossing home plate.

Jahshua Jones and Erik Crossman homered for Regina, which got three hits from Phil Langlois.

Wade Weinburger, who on Monday was named the WMBL’S player of the week, had a monster game for Weyburn on Tuesday — registering two home runs, four RBI and three runs scored.

The Red Sox carried one-run leads into the bottom of the ninth and 10th innings, only to have the Beavers extend the game both times with single runs.

Anthony De La Cruz earned the victory in relief. Chandler Casey was the losing pitcher.

The teams’ pitchers combined for 31 strikeouts — including 16 by Regina — in 11 innings.

If a fifth game is required, it will be played Friday, 7:05 p.m., at Tom Laing Park.

Weyburn, which won the Eastern Division’s regular-season title with a 37-11 record, is hoping to win its first championship since the WMBL’S inception in 2001.

Regina, which was third at 26-21, won WMBL titles in 2011 and 2012. The Red Sox are aiming for their first championship-series berth since 2015, when the Lethbridge Bulls won the league final.

In the Western Division final, the Medicine Hat Mavericks and Edmonton Prospects were tied 1-1 heading into Wednesday ’s game in the Alberta capital.

Game 4 is Thursday in Edmonton. A fifth game, if necessary, will be played Friday in Medicine Hat.

The CFL’S Saskatchewan Roughriders announced the signing of international defensive back Loucheiz Purifoy on Wednesday.

Purifoy, 25, was released by the Ottawa Redblacks on Monday. In seven games with the Redblacks this season, he had 29 defensive tackles, four pass knock-downs, one interception (against Saskatchewan) and a forced fumble.

He spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons with the B.C. Lions before signing with Ottawa as a free agent.
