Man shoots fireworks at protest camp

-

A 25-year-old man from Yorkton has been charged after someone shot fireworks towards the Justice for Our Stolen Children protest camp.

Regina police have charged the man with arson with disregard for human life, assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, and uttering threats.

Police responded to the protest camp, located in Wascana Park across from the Legislative Building, at 2 a.m. on Sunday. They had received a report about a man who exited a vehicle parked in the Legislative Building ’s parking lot, fired a roman candle at the camp, and then fled, according to a news release issued on Monday.

Police said no one was injured, and the camp wasn’t damaged.

Meanwhile, the accused man is scheduled to appear in Regina provincial court on Sept. 17.

Speaking Monday, camp members brushed off the incident.

Prescott Demas said he’s “thankful and grateful” someone reported the incident to the police and that the camp has become a community where people are watching out for one another.

Robyn Pitawanakwat said incidents like this don’t alarm her, and she wants to focus on the cause.

“What is alarming are still the issues where we’re fighting here at the camp for families to be reunified, we’re fighting for families every day, and those are the things that we’re worried about right now,” she said.
