Ford builds its 10 millionth Mustang at Detroit plant

- NICHOLAS MARONESE Driving.ca

Ford’s 10 millionth Mustang rolled off the line at its Flat Rock assembly plant near Detroit, Mich., on August 8, a major milestone for the best-selling sports car of the past half-century.

The car was a six-speed V8 Mustang GT boasting 460 horsepower and finished in Wimbledon White, just like VIN 001, the first produc- tion Mustang built in 1964.

(Of course, that car made do with a three-speed transmission and 164 hp.)

The automaker marked the occasion with a gathering of some 60 Mustang owners, who parked their new and classic pony cars to form the number 10,000,000. A trio of P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft were prepared for a flyby over the site as well.

Another cadre of Mustang owners also planned to parade from Ford’s headquarters in Dearborn, where the Mustang was first built, to Flat Rock. Mustangs have also been built in San Jose, Calif., and in Metuchen, N.J.

The milestone car will show up at the 2019 Detroit Auto Show and be toured around the country after that, but Ford is not yet sure of where it wants the car to end up, or if it might sell it to a collector.

The 10,000,000-car milestone is one usually only achieved by popular family cars or workhorse pickup trucks. For comparison, Chevrolet has built just 5.5 million Camaros and 1.6 million Corvettes. The record for highest production numbers for a nameplate belongs to the Toyota Corolla, at 44 million over 52 years, reports the Detroit Free Press.
