Public urged to take precautions on heels of garage, shed break-ins

-

The Regina Police Service has some tips for residents to improve security of their garage doors and sheds after 23 break and enters were reported between Aug. 7 and Aug. 14.

“An ongoing issue is thieves gaining access through unlocked and unsecured doors,” said a police news release. “Taking a few minutes to secure garage doors and sheds could potentially prevent break and enters by thieves searching for an easy access.”

Police are recommending a number of strategies to help prevent garage break and enters:

Securely lock all garage doors; both outside doors and the attached doors that lead into your house.

Remove garage door openers from cars parked on the street or driveway. “To thieves, that small piece of plastic is the key to a treasure trove of valuables, and even possible access to your house through an attached garage,” said the release.

Assess the condition of garage doors. A weak or damaged door or lock is easily forced open by wouldbe intruders.

Install motion sensor lights by your driveway/doors.

“Crime prevention involves the whole community,” said the release.

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is encouraged to call the Regina Police Service at 306-7776500. Call 9-1-1 if you see a crime in progress.
