SASKATOON A man with a history of beating women is going to prison for physically and sexually assaulting two female acquaintances.

In addition to his past assault convictions involving female victims from 2011, Jarrid Evan Mandes, 28, now has two more convictions after pleading guilty to assault and sexual assault stemming from incidents in 2016 and 2017.

Mandes repeatedly punched and choked one of the women over three days, Crown prosecutor Ainsley Furlonger told Saskatoon provincial court.

The next assault was also prolonged, court heard. It began with Mandes asking another woman about who was on her phone and then punching, choking and threatening to break her jaw, according to facts presented in court.

The woman was driving at the time, making the assault even more dangerous, Furlonger pointed out.

When they got home, Mandes followed the woman into the shower and raped her.

He also tried to keep the woman from testifying at his trial by coaching her on how to avoid getting arrested. A warrant was issued after she failed to show up for Mandes’s first trial, court heard.

The Crown and defence jointly submitted a sentence of four years on the sexual assault charge and time served on the assault charge. Furlonger said Mandes’s pattern of disturbing behaviour toward women, some of whom were domestic partners, the prolonged nature of the assaults and his criminal record warrants a four-year sentence.

“I think you are being given very generous credit for your guilty pleas,” Judge Marilyn Gray said when imposing the proposed sentence.

Mandes’ lawyer, Tim Nolin, said his client was drinking heavily during that time in his life and knows he needs treatment.
