Jones won’t be back in black on Saturday

WINNIPEG Green remains the colour for Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach and general manager Chris Jones.

For the past three CFL games, Jones has worn a green “Diversity is Strength’’ T-shirt instead of wearing his traditional black attire.

The Riders have won all three games with Jones in green and that means he won’t be back in black for Saturday’s Banjo Bowl against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“If I showed up (Saturday) without my green shirt, (the players) would probably kill me,” Jones said Friday while meeting with the media.

Defensive end Willie Jefferson was over the top when asked for his thoughts on Jones in green.

“To actually see Coach Jones in any other colour besides black is breathtaking,” Jefferson said.

“Then for him to wear it three games in a row, that’s the most he has worn any other colour besides black since he has been my coach (starting in 2014 with the Edmonton Eskimos).”

Jones isn’t superstitious. He originally wore the green shirt to show his support for the CFL’S “Diversity is Strength” initiative. So why change?

“He looks good in green,” said Riders receiver Naaman Roosevelt.

“Whatever he wears, we’re down with it.”

Riders defensive back Ed Gainey is all about Jones in green if that’s a reason why the Riders have won three straight.

“They say it has been good luck for us, so I’m all for it,’’ Gainey said.

“It’s not bad to have a little fashion sense ... he always has on all black. It’s a good look for him if he wants to look tough all the time, but it’s a little bit lighter on the eyes with the green.”
