The University of Regina Rams’ Noah Picton celebrated an overtime victory in record-setting fashion Saturday.

A 35-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Borsa, which made Picton the all-time leader in U Sports passing yardage, was the difference as the Rams edged the University of Manitoba Bisons 32-31 in Canada West football action in Winnipeg.

The toss to Borsa gave Picton 11,496 career passing yards and allowed him to move past former University of Sherbrooke star Jeremi Roch (11,477).

“I’ve just been very fortunate to be surrounded with great coaches and teammates for five years,” Picton said. “Football is a neat sport in that it really takes 12 guys on the field doing their job for one guy to have success.

“I’ve been very lucky to reach this milestone. A lot of great guys have contributed to this.”

After Borsa’s touchdown, Manitoba scored on a 16-yard pass from Des Catellier to Shai Ross. The Bisons proceeded to go for the twopoint convert, and the win, but Cole Benkic knocked down a pass and Regina improved its record to 3-2 (good for a second-place tie with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies). Manitoba dropped to 2-3.

“I’m just pleased we were able to come home with the win,” Picton said. “Sheldon Gray has our defence playing at a very high level and they ’ve really been the foundation of this team’s success.

“The offence is still working out some kinks, and at that really starts with myself. We just want to peak at the right time and peak come the post-season.”

Regina had gone ahead 25-8 midway through the fourth quarter, but Manitoba scored the next 17 points to force overtime.

Borsa rushed 16 times for 128 yards, including a 61-yarder, and one touchdown. He added five catches for 97 yards en route to compiling 297 all-purpose yards.
