Buettner sparkles for Ottawa Gee-gees

Former Regina Thunder quarterbac­k Sawyer Buettner threw five touchdown passes Saturday to lead the University of Ottawa Gee- Gees to a 38-27 victory over the Carleton Ravens before 24,470 spectators at TD Place.

The Moose Jaw-born Buettner has thrown nine touchdown passes and only one intercepti­on while seeing duty in the Gee- Gees’ last four games. Ottawa (4-1) has won each game in which he has played.

Carleton was ranked fifth in U Sports entering the OUA game. Ottawa was ninth.

The Thunder improved its record to 3-3 on Sunday by edging the Edmonton Wildcats 27-26 at Mosaic Stadium.

Edmonton attempted a gamewinnin­g, 47-yard field goal late in the fourth quarter, but the kick hit the crossbar.

Regina assumed a one-point lead with 2:13 left in the fourth quarter when Eric Maximuik converted a TD pass from Brock Sich to Ethan Douglas. Sich threw for 300 yards and three majors.

Noah Sorrell rushed for 151 yards and two touchdowns to help the Martin Monarchs defeat the Luther Lions 47-13 in Regina Intercolle­giate Football League action Friday at Mosaic Stadium.

One of Sorrell’s touchdowns was on a 60-yard run.

Monarchs quarterbac­k Kaleb Kardash-drackett added two touchdown runs.

Dylan Atherton had six tackles and a sack for Martin, which got an intercepti­on return for a touchdown by Lawrence Smith.

Also on Friday, the Sheldon-williams Spartans defeated the Thom Trojans 26-7 and the Greenall Griffins downed the Johnson Wildcats 47-3. Details from those two games were unavailabl­e.
