Kleisinger putsup20 for Cougars at Classic

The Cougar Classic women’s basketball tournament is to conclude Friday at the University of Regina’s Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport.

At 3 p.m., the University of Saskatchew­an Huskies will play the Lakehead University Thunderwol­ves, after which the U of R Cougars will meet the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns at 5 p.m.

On Wednesday, the Cougars defeated Lakehead 75-58 on the strength of a 20-point, 10-rebound performanc­e from Michaela Kleisinger.

Kyanna Giles (11 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists) and Christina Mccusker (14 points, 13 rebounds) also had doubledoub­les for the Cougars, who got 13 points and nine rebounds from Macaela Crone.

The Cougars were to play the Huskies on Thursday night.

The Regina Pat Canadians got two-goal performanc­es from Luc Marleau and Cole Sillinger in a 9-1 victory over the host Yorkton Rawtec Maulers on Wednesday.

Ayden Third, Cal Caragata, Adam Kydd, Carter Belitski and Carson Whyte also scored for the Pat Canadians.

Belitski and Noah Kuntz (who had four assists) had four-point performanc­es as Regina improved its Saskatchew­an Midget AAA Hockey League record to 4-0-0-1. Justin Broekel scored for Yorkton.

Next up for the Pat Canadians is Sunday’s home opener against the Tisdale Trojans (3 p.m., Cooperator­s Centre).

Before the game, the Pat Canadians will pay tribute to last season’s captain, Adam Herold, with the raising of his No. 10 jersey. Herold was killed in the Humboldt Broncos’ bus crash.

The Regina High Schools Athletic Associatio­n’s girls soccer semifinals are set for Friday at 4 p.m.

In the 2A girls division, the Sheldon-williams Spartans will play the Martin Monarchs on Mount Pleasant’s north pitch. The Luther Lions, who finished first in the division’s regular-season standings, will receive a bye.

In the 3A girls semifinals, the Leboldus Golden Suns will play the Campbell Tartans (Realtors Park east) and the O’neill Titans will meet the Riffel Royals (Realtors Park west).

The 2A and 3A boys semifinals were to be played Thursday.

City finals are to be held Monday (2A) and Wednesday (3A) at the Affinitypl­ex facility on Evraz Place. On both days, matches are at 5 p.m. (girls) and 7 p.m. (boys).

The Thom Trojans edged the Johnson Wildcats 23-20 in Regina Intercolle­giate Football League action Wednesday.

In Wednesday’s other games, Sheldon-williams defeated Luther 49-22 and the Greenall Griffins defeated the Balfour Bears 40-2.
