Cougars sweep Wesmen in volleyball

The University of Regina Cougars women’s volleyball team swept the University of Winnipeg Wesmen in Canada West action on the weekend at the Centre for Kinesiolog­y, Health and Sport.

Regina prevailed 25-18, 25-18, 25-21 on Saturday after winning 25-21, 25-17, 22-25, 25-13 on Friday.

Jessica Lerminiaux and Ashlee Sandiford each had 11 kills Saturday for Regina (2-2).

The Cougars women’s basketball team

opened its Canada West season with back-to-back victories over the host University of Calgary Dinos.

Regina won 81-76 on Friday and 85-75 on Saturday.

Kyanna Giles had 29 points, nine rebounds and four steals in the opener. Faith Reid had a team-high 23 points, on the strength of 6-for9 shooting from three-point range, on Saturday, when Giles added 15 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals.

Regina’s men’s basketball team lost both of its games to Calgary, 91-68 and 95-60.

The Cougars basketball teams are preparing to play host to the Trinity Western Spartans. Games are set for 6 p.m. (women) and 8 p.m. (men) on Friday and Saturday.

The Regina Cougars and University

of Saskatchew­an Huskies women’s hockey teams split a Canada West home-and-home set.

Regina won 2-0 at the Co-operators Centre on Friday, when Morgan Baker made 19 saves for the shutout. Jaycee Magwood and Ireland South were the goal scorers.

Saturday in Saskatoon, Jessica Vance made 35 saves for the shutout in Saskatchew­an’s 2-0 win. The result left Regina with a 4-3-0-1 record.

The Yorkton Sacred Heart Saints

won the Saskatchew­an High Schools Athletic Associatio­n’s 2A boys soccer title Saturday, defeating the Moose Jaw Central Cyclones 3-2 in the gold-medal match.

Also in Battleford, the Riffel Royals edged the Luther Lions 4-3 in the bronze-medal match.

The other provincial champions are the Saskatoon St. Joseph Guardians (3A girls), Saskatoon Centennial Chargers (3A boys), Saskatoon Marion Graham Falcons (2A girls), Waldheim Raiders (1A girls) and Lake Lenore Lancers (1A boys).

The O’neill Titans (3A girls) and Stoughton Bulldogs (1A boys) won bronze medals.
