Cougars win one And lose one

-

A layup by guard Benjamin Hillis with 12 seconds left proved to be the difference as the University of Regina Cougars edged the visiting University of Manitoba Bisons 8685 in Canada West men’s basketball Saturday night.

Regina was down by one point when the Cougars’ Carter Millar deflected a pass near midcourt. The ball went to Hillis, who then executed a give-and-go with Millar.

Millar made another huge play in the waning seconds, blocking a three-point attempt by Malik Irwin.

Regina split a weekend set with Manitoba, which had won 76-72 on Friday at the Centre for Kinesiology, Health and Sport.

On Saturday, Manitoba led by 11 midway through the fourth quarter and by nine with 2½ minutes left before Regina rallied.

“I have few words to describe that one,” Cougars head coach Steve Burrows said in a media release after his team improved its record to 5-3.

“We did enough things well down the stretch to give us an opportunity and we maintained our composure. Obviously, we were fortunate to get that one done.”

In Canada West women’s basketball at the CKHS, the Cougars won 83-60 on Saturday to complete a weekend sweep of Manitoba.

Giles had a career-high 31 points Friday to power Regina to a 91-75 victory.
