Maple Leaf Pool should be rebuilt

-

Let’s close more inner-city facilities — that’s a great idea. Maple Leaf Pool needs to be rebuilt. Time and again we hear that one way to reduce crime is to provide opportunities for children, not take them away.

The idea of city hall providing more programming for children is laughable. I don’t believe for a second that city hall has the ability to provide more long-term programming for children if it can’t even plan ahead to keep an outdoor pool open for them.

Where was the planning committee that put an expansive spray park next to the Sandra Schmirler indoor pool facility in the east end? Why not plan ahead and save that money for inner city children, or even those living in Glencairn?

Many facilities meet their life expectancy and we rebuild them. For example, Taylor Field met its life expectancy and we rebuilt it.

The idea of children walking to Wascana Pool is laughable, and I’m sure city council will keep the admission free for the children just like it is for Maple Leaf Pool. If this closure happens, how long before we lose Massey, Dewdney and Regent outdoor pools?

The lack of wisdom and foresight on council and at city hall is staggering. Maybe city council should look at its political life expectancy if it closes Maple Leaf Pool.
